Background & objectives

GENIUS is a Co-ordination and Support Action (CSA) that recognises the achievements of previous framework funded projects such as ERIG and G-TRAIN and other initiatives like the ESNC (European Satellite Navigation Competition). GENIUS extends the activities of these projects and programmes and introduces many new initiatives to achieve the major project objectives of strengthening GNSS research and education programmes and fostering co-operation between research and business.

Why this project is important for EGNOS/GSA/SatNav?

To ensure that Europe remains at the forefront in GNSS education, a more intense and inclusive collaboration across research groups at universities, research institutes and industry is needed.

Objectives

GENIUS has two major objectives:To Strengthen GNSS Research and Education Programmes

  • To Foster Co-operation Between Research and Business.

GENIUS supports and nurtures a network of universities and research institutions that are active in the provision of GNSS education in the field of satellite navigation technologies, applications and services. It implements actions for strengthening education of GNSS students, PhD candidates and professionals enabling them to achieve an excellent level of competence in GNSS, share best practise with experts and peers across the academic sector and industry and to develop their industrial experience and knowledge. The project lays the foundation for the development of pan-European collaborations and enables technology transfer between the university and research institutes and industry.

It strengthens GNSS education for industry through the delivery of a professional education programme with a special focus on SMEs, as well as through modern distance learning tools. It underpins the operation of the ESNC University Challenge in 2012. It extends the impact of the competition by enabling focussed activity to promote and support the competition entrants in 6 universities across the EU.
